THE HIGHLANDS JOURNEY - LESOTHO

Lesotho, known as the Mountain Kingdom or Kingdom in the Sky, holds a wealth of different experiences in store for those who visit there. Mountains, valleys and rivers present unforgettable panoramas for tourists.
In the mountains is the source of Lesotho’s crystal-clear water, which also waters the greenpastures for livestock. Diamonds are amongst the minerals found in the mountains. Indeed, Lesotho can truly be called the Kingdom in the Sky.

The Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) is a multibillion Maloti (equivalent to SA Rand) bi-national water resources development and management initiative established by a treaty signed between the governments of Lesotho and South Africa in 1986 as a priority and strategy to reduce poverty, stimulate economic growth and improve the livelihoods of the people of the two countries.
The aim of the LHWP is to harness the water of the Lesotho water, constructing massive dam walls, diverting the flow and transferring water to South Africa to meet the industrial and domestic water needs of the Gauteng Province, while simultaneously providing hydropower for Lesotho.
When the thunderstorms erupt over the Maloti Mountains, even the smallest stream can rapidly become a raging torrent. In winter, the melting ice and snow trickle into freezing streams. Since the completion of the first phase of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, this water is transferred by gravity to South Africa, forging a long-term partnership between Lesotho and South Africa.
